REMEMBER: SLAVERY AND THE ART OF SUBVERSION

Harlem Bespoke:  Juneteenth is celebrated this day as the final but belated end to slavery in the United Stated after the Civil War.  Enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas did not know they had been freed two months after the war ended but were finally notified when federal troops arrived to officially make the proclamation.  With that in mind, looking back at last year's exhibit at the Schomburg called Slavery and the Art of Subversion provides a glimpse of the the struggle for freedom that was aided by art, literature and song during the first half of the 19th Century. Everything is still up for in-person visits from Tuesdays-Saturdays with advance appointments but also can be viewed online: LINK
